When I found out I was pregnant with my first baby in March 2021, I felt really anxious about the prospect of giving birth. I was really keen to try out hypnobirthing because I liked the idea of being calm and in control. I also thought it would help me with any stress and worries throughout my pregnancy.
I attended the course at Happy Baby Studio with Briony who was so lovely and funny. Just being able to talk to her and the other mums to be put my mind at ease and made me feel so much more positive. I practised the breathing techniques Briony taught us every day during my third trimester and also showed my partner some ways he could help during labour such as light touch massage.
When my waters broke early one Sunday morning I felt completely calm and prepared for what my body was about to do. I ended up going into hospital straight away due to some complications which the doctors wanted to keep an eye on. Whilst in hospital, my contractions increased steadily throughout the day. I was offered paracetamol for the pain but mostly just bounced on a yoga ball, kept moving, walking up and down the corridors of the ward and used the calming breath.
Around 9pm, I started to feel the urge to push. I hadn’t been examined up to this point so asked a midwife if they could take a look to see how things were progressing. The midwife asked a more senior midwife for a second opinion. I couldn’t believe it when they said I was fully dilated. The midwives laughed. They hadn’t realised how far along I was because I was so calm.
Once on delivery, things got a little trickier. My little girl was in an awkward position and after nearly two hours of pushing she hadn’t arrived. After discussions with my partner and asking for more time to see if baby could come on her own, I made the decision to go with an assisted delivery. Again the hypnobirthing techniques kept me really calm whilst in theatre even though I was exhausted by this point. It wasn’t long before my perfect little girl arrived!
I honestly believe that hypnobirthing played a huge part in my birth story. Even though I hadn’t envisaged an assisted delivery, I was still amazed at how I had coped and what my body had done during labour and birth. Hypnobirthing also helped me to feel empowered and make informed decisions when things didn’t exactly go to plan. I couldn’t recommend hypnobirthing more.
